To Whom It May Concern:

I wanted to take a moment to express my thoughts about the
importance of the UKC Dog Sport program.  As a fairly new dog
sport competitor I was thrilled to find this venue through UKC.  I
attended conformation shows with my German Shepherd Dogs,
but it was the Dog Sport program that really caught my eye.

As a single female, the original reason I sought out a GSD was
for personal protection and to deter anyone that may be
interested in breaking into my house.  We took a lot of obedience
classes prior to finding the right trainer.  I was having some
difficulties with my female shepherd, when I finally found Cheryl
Carlson at the 2006 Premier in Kalamazoo .  She offered to help
me on the spot and give me some tips.  After that moment I knew
I had to do whatever it took to go and train with Cheryl.  Capital
City Dog Sport Association introduced me to the UKC Dog Sport
program and I’ve been hooked on it ever since.  I was so excited
about the program that I moved from the Novi area to St. Johns ,
in order to train for this sport with this club.

The difference this program and Cheryl’s training for the
program made in my GSD is amazing.  Initially, I had a very
defensive, dominant female with no outlet and limited control.
The Dog Sport program gave me the foundation to understand
the type of dog that I have, as well as, the best way to harness all
her instincts to protect me.  Without this program and Cheryl
Carlson , I know that I would not have a dog that has since
passed her Canine Good Citizen, Therapy Dog International, and
has been certified by Service Animal Registry of America as a
Service Dog.

Not only do I feel safer by having the protection of my dogs, but I
now understand the necessity for balance in their lives.  The Dog
Sport program gives my dogs the balance and recreation that
they require to be happy and healthy.  I’ve since bought a male
GSD from Cheryl and he is a UKC Champion, has his Family
Obedience, and Protection Alert at the age of 2.  Additionally, he
has also passed his Canine Good Citizen, Therapy Dog
International, and has been certified by Service Animal Registry
of America as a Service Dog.

As you can tell I’m very proud of my dogs and their
accomplishments.  I’m sure that without this program and Cheryl
my dogs would not be the great representation of the breed in
public that they are today.  I started out as a novice handler with
a strong breed and feel like thanks to the UKC, the Dog Sport
Program and Cheryl Carlson , I have 2 well behaved yet
protective dogs.

I hope you will consider all the benefits of the program for people
like me who feel it is important to show people that a protection
dog can also be a social, happy pet who performs and behaves
in all circumstances… be it therapy dog, service dog, protection
dog or couch potato!

I am very upset that you are canceling the Sport Dog Program. It’
s the first venue my dog has excelled at and she is a heavily
titled dog. CGC, TDIA, TT, CD, RN, SchH BH, FR Ring 1, UKC FO, P1,
PA, OB1, PD1 because this is the first venue that concentrates &
compliments the pioneer vision of the UKC in creating such a
program that recognized the protective instincts and abilities of
our family dogs.

Please give us more time. Dogs, Competitors, Judges and
Decoys train long and hard before ever stepping on a field.
Please don’t shut us down.

I am very proud of the accomplishments & titles earned through
the UKC program. I went with the UKC program because of its
reputation of stability and longevity. If you see from our titles
above there are no fly by night worthless titles only titles from
reputable organizations.

To whom it may concern,

The UKC is my home registry and has been my registry of choice
for well over a decade. Competitive obedience, weight pull, agility
and terrier races and other "Dog sports events" have been the
main reason for my admiration of and dedication to the UKC. As a
professional dog trainer I value the competitive working events
that the UKC offers. Whenever possible I train my clients and
their dogs and use your performance titles as training goals for
them. My clients, family and I have always been extremely proud
to be small part of the UKC dog sports events.

I train a number of police k9 teams in the New England area. I
currently use the USPCA as the certifier for these units. I also
have a great number of clients that train their dogs for personal
protection and have no reliable organization to certify our
personal protection dogs. My clients and I would emphatically
support and consistently participate in a revamped UKC Dog
Sports certification and titling program.

I believe that the leadership, professionalism and vast
experience of Ms. Cheryl Carlson of St. Johns Michigan could
and would bring a revamped dog sports program to the next
level and make that program worthy of the credibility and
fairness that has become the hallmark of the United Kennel Club.

I truly believe that the only real working dog registry in the United
States is the United Kennel Club.

Thank you for your attention on this subject.

Safe training,
Chris Fraize

We would like to express our thankfulness that
SDA/Dog Sports/UKC have recognized that there
may be some who have interest in this sport,
excluding the bite work, which is our case.  We
take great pride in the fact that our AMBOR
(Australian Cattle Dog/Border Collie) is able to
participate in the challenging obedience
exercises and feel great accomplishment for
our Ranger, 9 years young.

Dear Mrs. Morgan,

I am writing regarding the recent news of the UKC cancelling the
Dog Sports program.

I sincerely hope that the UKC can re-evaluate this decision and
continue to highlight and recognize the instincts and heritage of
canines historically bred for the purpose of protection, guarding
and tracking. Recognizing these abilities within the already
established and carefully structured rules of the UKC Dog Sports
program will serve to promote responsible training, breeding and
ownership of those animals suited to this specific skill set. There
are many examples to demonstrate that these trials and the titles
earned as a result are used to ensure that the desirable instincts
and physical characteristics of a breed are maintained through its
breeding program. For many of these breeds, the desirable
qualities include the physical soundness, courage and reliability
needed to perform protection and police K9 work while
maintaining a high level of control and a strong degree of
obedience.

I urge the UKC to recognize the important role of its Dog Sport
program along with its hunting, herding, and coursing programs as
proven and recognized measures for breeders and owners to
demonstrate progress in type and quality, and/or for practical use,
stamina, and obedience.

Specialized competitive activities like the Dog Sport program and
the clubs that sponsor them are critical to preserving the heritage
of dogs as companions and working partners of man.

Please consider continuing your Dog Sport program under the
sponsorship of another group of organized dog sport
competitors/veterans and I believe it will set a new standard in Dog
Sports worldwide.

Thank you for your consideration,
Carly Glovinski

I am writing regarding the recent news of the UKC cancelling
the Dog Sports program. I sincerely hope that the UKC can
re-evaluate this decision. The UKC must be complimented for
its pioneering vision in creating such a program
acknowledging the protective instincts and abilities of our
family dogs. The honor of recognition these UKC titles give in
appearing on pedigrees truly proves your motto of "Our Dogs
Do Stuff". The guidelines of the UKC Dog Sports program are
already in place. Please give thought to continuing this
marvelous program under the sponsorship of another group of
organized dog sport
competitors/veterans. I believe it would expand and flourish as
the UKC desires if given another chance under different
management. The UKC mission to "create performance events
in which dogs can prove their instincts and heritage" should
continue to highlight and recognize the dog's oldest job.
protecting family and home! Please continue the UKC Dog

Sports program.

Dear Ms. Morgan,

I recently heard some news regarding UKC's decision to cancel
its Dog Sports program I was disappointed upon hearing this
news and it is my sincerest wish that UKC changes its position
on this matter. UKC has long set itself apart from other registries
for the recognition it gives to the working breeds. Few registries
allow for these breeds to effectively use the instincts that have
been bred into them and the intelligence that, when properly
honed through training, is a beautiful site to behold. I personally,
have 2 champion conformation dogs, and would like to branch
out to other areas. I really appreciate the time and effort that
goes into adding the titles earned to my dogs' pedigrees. I
especially love UKC's motto: "Honor To Whom Honor is Due."
When multiple titles appear on a UKC pedigree, it fully advertises
to the world, "Our Dogs Do Stuff," as your motto states. The hard
work of creating guidelines for the UKC Dog Sports is already in
place. Please strongly consider the continuation of this
innovative and wonderful program under the sponsorship of
another group of organized dog sport competitors/veterans.
With new leadership, I believe that this program could gain
momentum, and expand in entries to become a
highly successful branch of the UKC's show dog offerings.
I love that the UKC has a mission that states that it wants to
"create
performance events in which dogs can prove their instincts and
heritage." I feel that this should include and continue to include
and to feature the dog's oldest job: protection of the family and
the home.  I cannot think of a reason why this worthy program
should be dropped.
Please keep the Dog Sports program as a viable part of the
growing family of UKC of trainers, fanciers, and family pet
owners.
Sincerely,
Karen Kearney,
